3-Minute AA Talks: #7 – What ‘One Day at a Time’ Really Means

Hi, I’m Lisa, and I’m an alcoholic.

Early in sobriety, people kept telling me, “Just take it one day at a time.” I didn’t get it. I was worried about next week’s bills, next month’s custody hearing, the rest of my life.

But the truth is, I couldn’t even handle one day before AA—let alone a lifetime.

So I started small. “Just don’t drink today.” That was manageable. If I could stay sober from morning to night, that was a win. Sometimes it was one hour at a time, even one minute.

Over time, I learned that “one day at a time” isn’t just about drinking. It’s about living in the present—showing up, doing the next right thing, and letting God handle the rest.

When I stay in today, I’m okay. It’s when I time-travel into the past or future that I get overwhelmed.

If you’re new, just focus on today. Stay sober today, and you’re winning.

Thanks for letting me share.
