3-Minute AA Talks: #3: What ‘One Day at a Time’ Means to Me

Hi, I’m Brian, and I’m an alcoholic.

In early sobriety, “One Day at a Time” sounded like a cliché. But I’ve learned that it’s not about shrinking my ambition—it’s about saving my life.

When I try to control next week, next month, or next year, I spin out. I go back into fear, into planning, into playing God. But when I stay in this day—and just focus on staying sober, being useful, and doing the next right thing—I have peace.

One day, I stayed sober through a funeral. Another day, through a divorce. Another day, through joy I didn’t think I deserved. Each time, one day at a time.

That’s how I’ve stayed sober for over 4,000 days: not all at once—but one at a time.

If you’re here today and sober, you’re already doing it. Keep going.

Thanks for letting me share.
